Consue Springs Pond is an open-water area approximately one-quarter acre in size and is part of a larger open-water/wetland complex approximately 2.5 acres in size. The pond receives stormwater flow from a densely-populated and highly-trafficked area surrounding Union Street. Large amounts of sediment from these stormwater flows have accumulated in the pond, severely reducing the historic depths of the pond and adversely impacting the pond’s natural functions. The Town of Nantucket is considering dredging the deposited material from the pond to restore the retention capacity of the pond and thus improve the capacity of the pond to remove pollutants before they can migrate further downstream into productive shellfish beds within Nantucket Harbor.
Vine Associates Inc. performed a dredging feasibility assessment for Consue Springs Pond, including a bathymetric survey; design and implementation of sediment testing program; volume calculations; feasibility of different dredging options; assessment of dredged material management options; and cost estimates for each management option.
