VAI provided inspection, permitting, design, and construction services for the implementation of a structural improvement program for the Lafarge Marine Terminal in Charlestown, Massachusett.  The pier at the facility was originally constructed in the 1950’s.  The pier foundation is comprised of 8 foot diameter concrete caissons supported by timber piling.  The difficult marine environment has resulted in marine borer attack and deterioration to the caisson piling and deck connection.  The total cost for rehabilitation of the facility is in the order of $1.6 million.  Due to difficult access and the need to maintain the facility in service, VAI has developed a 4 year long-term improvement program.  Several alternate underpinning methods were considered and bid.  The second phase of the program is presently under construction.
